Glitch text on Instagram and TikTok

Both platforms accept glitch text. Both will quietly eat it if you ignore the character math, and the bio fields filter harder than anything else on your profile.

The number that decides everything

Every combining mark counts as a character. Not a letter, a character. Platforms count characters.

That single fact explains almost every complaint about glitch text on social apps. Below is the same thirteen-letter phrase at five different settings, with the real character cost of each and whether it fits.

Note where the line falls. The single-mark strikethrough style costs almost nothing and fits everywhere. Full zalgo does not fit either bio, and pasting it produces the truncation people usually blame on the app.

Why bios filter harder than captions

People hit this constantly and assume something is broken. It is deliberate.

Instagram sanitizes Unicode more aggressively in profile fields than in post content. Bios and display names are prominent, they are indexed, and they have historically been abused for impersonation and spam, so they get a stricter pass. A caption is lower risk, so it gets more room.

The practical consequence: test your bio in the bio field. Do not test it in a caption, see it work, and assume the profile will behave the same way.

The approach that survives everywhere

Use a single-mark style for bios and display names, and save the stacked effects for captions. Strikethrough, underline and slashed each cost one character per letter, stay readable, and are far less likely to be stripped by a profile filter.

Keep your searchable words plain

This is the one that costs people real reach. Both apps have in-app search, and both index the text in your bio and captions. Glitched text is not matched by a plain-text search, because the stored characters are not the ones anyone types.

So put your niche, your city, your keyword in plain text, and glitch the decorative parts. A bio reading "horror edits" in clean letters with one glitched flourish will be found. A fully corrupted bio will not.

The same goes for accessibility. Screen readers announce combining marks individually, so a fully glitched bio is unusable for anyone browsing with assistive software.

A workflow that avoids retyping

  1. Write the bio in plain text first and get it under the limit.
  2. Decide which one or two words carry the mood. Only those get glitched.
  3. Generate just those words in the glitch text generator, with your platform picked in the dropdown so the counter warns you early.
  4. Paste them back into your plain bio, then check the total length in the app before saving.
  5. Look at your own profile on a phone afterwards. Rendering differs from the browser preview.

Instagram and TikTok questions

Why does glitch text work in my Instagram caption but not my bio?

Instagram applies stricter Unicode filtering to profile fields than to captions and comments. A bio is prominent, indexed and abused more often, so it gets sanitized harder. The same string can render fully in a caption and come back flattened in the bio.

How many characters is an Instagram bio?

150 characters. Every combining mark counts as one of them, so a heavily glitched phrase can fill the entire field with three or four visible letters.

How many characters is a TikTok bio?

80 characters for most accounts, though TikTok has been testing longer bios with some users. At 80 characters you have room for a light effect on a short phrase and very little else.

Can I use glitch text in a TikTok username?

No. TikTok usernames accept letters, numbers, underscores and periods only. Your nickname, the display name shown on your profile, is more permissive and is where glitch text goes.

Will glitch text hurt my reach on Instagram or TikTok?

There is no evidence either platform penalizes it. What it does do is make your text unreadable to search inside the app and to anyone using a screen reader, which can cost you discovery in a way an algorithm penalty would not. Keep your keywords in plain text.

Why does my glitch text look different in the app than on this site?

Instagram and TikTok render text in their own app fonts, which stack combining marks more tightly than a desktop browser does. The characters are identical. Preview at the intensity you plan to use rather than assuming a match.
